Does your class love classic books as much as mine? What is it about kindergarten that they just fall in love with The Pigeon books,No, David! and Pete the Cat?

Here is a 'Don't Let the Pigeon' writing activity you can do with your kindergarten class.

Let me share my favorite Pigeon books to read before this activity, how to do it and give you a freebie to help you make it happen.

What is the 'Don't Let the Pigeon..' activity?

Students will create a guided drawing of the pigeon, create a background setting and add a writing piece.

The goal: students come up with their own thing that the pigeon should absolutely NOT do.

They love this activity. First off, I will warn you that by teaching your students how to draw the pigeon, you will see pigeon drawn during every writer's workshop opportunity for a few days following {wink}

Let's break it down and start with the whole group part of the lesson.

Step 1 - Teach how to draw the pigeon

Do a guided drawing (or directed drawing) lesson where you model one step with verbal directions and a model they can see and students copy that step on their own paper. You continue with each step until you've got a pigeon.

These are all valid ways of teaching how to draw Pigeon for kindergarten:

My kinders were usually on the carpet area with their pencil boxes next to them and a lap board/clipboard underneath their work.

I always liked to have the book open to a page with the entire pigeon visible so they can see the end goal.

Alright, let's cover the next step.

Step 2 - Prepare a background and fun lettering

Each student needs a new large piece of construction paper for their background and some lettering that looks like it came from a Mo Willems pigeon book.

Students cut out each word and glue it onto their construction paper - in order.

Then they cut out their pigeon. (I recommended cutting rectangles for the legs)

Step 3 - Do the 'Don't Let the Pigeon' writing and drawing

Kindergartners are so creative. I don't think I had to tell anybody what to pick.. but of course, there were a few who picked the bus {wink}

In kindergarten, pictures they make are just about as important as the words they write.

They draw and color a scene (or really, the thing that the pigeon should absolutely not do).

They complete their glued on sentence to finish the statement, 'Don't let the pigeon..' by writing their own idea to match their illustrated scene.

Their pigeon gets glued on top of their scene to finish it off.

Or, if they think outside the box (or off the page) like this little guy below, they may ask you for a solution on how to make the pigeon look like he's coming out of the firetruck.

That's it! Your class can totally do this 'Don't Let the Pigeon' writing extension activity too.

You could turn them into a class book, but we liked to hang them up as masterpieces!

Airmail – Stop Fighting Email

I used iOS Mail for years and years, and never had much of a problem with it. However, as time went on, my use of email outgrew the app. Using the “Unread” inbox filter to keep track of emails that require action is a terrible way to manage your email. I decided I wanted a more powerful app so that I could move to an inbox zero-based approach.

The bottom line is that Airmail allows me to be faster and more organized with my email.

The goal is to get everything that isn’t important right now out of my inbox, so I can focus on what is important. After reading an email, if I don’t have to take any action on it, I archive it right away. If it’s something I need to deal with later that day, like when I get home, I usually just leave it in the inbox. If I’m going to deal with it another day, I snooze it.

Snoozing is one of the most powerful features of Airmail. Snooze a message, and Airmail moves it to a special folder. Then, at the snooze time, I get a fresh push notification and the message reappears in my inbox. This has totally streamlined the way I work with email. 2Do – Total Control Over Reminders

The way I used the iOS Reminders app was weird. I had all notifications except the app badge turned off, and all reminders set for the morning (the default time of 9am). That way, everything was technically “overdue,” and the app badge just showed my total number of tasks for the day. This system had once worked for me, but more and more now it felt like it was working against me.

*2Do is so unbelievable customizable that I was able to set it up exactly the way I wanted.

For some apps, having too many options is a pain. But I use my reminders app every single day, many times a day, so having it set up perfectly is a major time saver for me. (Read the full review)

Bear – Beautiful Notes

First and foremost, Bear is a text editor. And it’s a good one. Bear is fully compliant with Markdown, and the interface is clean and simple.

Actually, it’s more than “clean and simple.” Bear’s interface is gorgeous.

And Bear goes beyond just writing text. You can add images inline, or any other type of file as an attachment. Tagging is as simple as adding a hashtag anywhere in the note. Tags are better than folders because you can put a single note under multiple tags if you want. All in all, Bear is a joy to use, and it makes jotting things down and getting organized almost fun! Day One – Clear Your Head

I’ve dabbled in journaling before, occasionally keeping a prayer journal during my daily Bible time. But I hadn’t ever set out to make a journal about my life in general. The beauty of a journal is that it can be anything. There are no rules.

Fortunately, Day One allows me to still be organized, even without rules.
